     History
Keeler began as a transportation hub in the 1870s. It was stratgically located in the Owens Valley at the base of the Inyo Mountains in between the Owens Lake and the mining town of Cerro Gordo. Durring the mining boom years in the late 1800s, silver ore was shipped down the mountain from a cable tramway to Keeler. From Keeler the ore was transported accross the huge Owens lake by steamship and then overland by mule teams to Los Angeles. Later, the narrow gage Carson and Colorado railroad reached Keeler - the furthest it would ever run - and transported the ore north to Nevada. By the early 1900s, mining collapsed and the railroad pulled completely out of the Owens Valley in 1916. With no ore to ship, the town began to die. By the 1920s, Los Angeles had purchased most of the Owens Valley (over 800,000 acres) and began to extract the water, quicly drying up the Owens lake. The town never recovered. The toxic dust blown from the dry lake bed created the worst air quality in the United States. The air was so toxic, that the EPA sued Los Angeles and designated the dry lake bed a "Superfund" environmental desaster site. According to the 2000 census, only 19 familys remain.

     Future Plans
After losing in court, Los Angeles is attempting to control the air quality through small ponds and planting salt brush.
