(Edit on 5/13/11: This is no longer the case. The bed-and-breakfast hotel and the bunkhouse are no longer in business and cannot be rented out). After the discovery of extremely high quality silver in the 1860s, a small barren mining camp known as Cerro Gordo located high in the Inyo Mountains grew to a town of over 4,800. The sheer, almost cliff-like slope of the mountain's western face made travel up to the 9,000 foot high town extremely difficult so a cable car tram was built to haul the valuable ore down to the Owens Valley. Once the ore reached Keeler at the base of the mountains, the silver was shipped first by mule train to Los Angeles then later by narrow gage railroad to Carson City. By 1879 the mines were played out and the town's large population quickly left. Smaller scale mining continued until the 1930s.
