     History
Fluorite, a mineral used as a flux and in the production of types of glass, was first located here in 1937. In 1946 these claims were patented as the Pink Elephant Mine by General Chemical Company. The mine was never significantly worked due to its low quality and small quantity of ore and its remote location, which increased transportation and labor costs. Rails were laid in the adits and a cable tramway system was constructed connecting the upper and lower levels of workings in an attempt to improve efficiency, though eventually the mine was finally abandoned for good sometime in the 1960s.
