There used to be an almost intact, partially flooded underground pump room, but (probably Estonian or Russian) copper thieves found their way in and took the machines apart. Now there's almost nothing to see. The cranes used to be "uncharted territory", but since then local kids and copper thieves have ruined them too. The great view over the riverfront, city and harbour area are still there, though, and it's a nice climb, too.

Shipbuilding on the banks of river Aura has been one of the most important parts of the industrial history of Turku since the 18th century. Small shipyards were established, and through centuries they flourished and withered, merged and separated, until finally they were all owned by single industrial giant. Ships also developed over the years, sails gave way to steam and steam to diesel, wood was replaced with iron and steel, and even today the largest and most modern cruise ships are built in Turku. After building hundreds of ships the shipyard moved to a better location and the constant noise of shipbuilding industry ceased here for good. The first shipyard in Turku was established on the eastern bank in 1732, and it was followed by several other smaller enterpreneurs. Slowly the era of sailing ships turned into the age of steam, and machine workshops, more flexible than old shipyards, were founded in Turku. The first metal workshop and foundry was established in 1842 on the eastern bank, below a hill called Korppoolaismäki. After the Crimean war the workshop was acquired by William Crichton. When iron replaced wood as building material, Crichton built a new shipyard on the lot of his machinery workshop near the mouth of river Aura. New ships were built, old ones repaired, and a joint-stock company, W:m Crichton & C:o Ab was established. After smaller shipyards were merged to the company, the Crichton shipyard was the largest company in Turku, and the new era of shipbuilding started. Unfortunately the first World War stopped the developement, and in 1913 W:m Crichton & C:o Ab went bankrupt. AB Crichton was established to protect the known business name. Another important machine workshop was Åbo mekaniska verkstads Ab (Turku Mechanic Workshop Ltd), found in 1874 on the eastern bank. It was later bought by another workshop that changed its name to Oy Vulcan Ab in 1899. After couple of decades of competing with Crichton the companies were merged into Crichton-Vulcan Oy in 1924. The remarkable steam engine and ship producer was, among other shipyards and machine workshops around Finland, merged into a large Finnish industrial giant, Wärtsilä, between 1936 and 1938. The name of the shipyard remained same until 1966, when it was changed into Oy Wärtsilä Ab Turun telakka. The size of the ships had grown over the years, and finally in the early 1970s both the shipyard which no longer had space to expand and the river itself started to be too small and cramped for building modern ships. A new, larger shipyard was built in Perno, eight kilometers from the old dock, in the mid-70s. The last ship built in the old shipyard was launched in 1976, but until 1984 the ships built in the new yard were finished in the banks of river Aura. After that the old shipyard was used as a repair yard for old ships. In 1989 Wärtsilä's shipbuilding branch, Wärtsilä Marine INC went bankrupt, but new ship repair company, Turun Korjaustelakka Oy, later Turku Repair Yard Ltd, was established to continue the business on the banks of the river Aura. In 2004 the company moved all business to the shipyard of Luonnonmaa, one of the largest in Northern Europe, in Naantali, and the old yard was abandoned. Even though the shipyards and industrial buildings on the western bank have been long since either demolished or converted for other purposes, and now new houses have been planned on the eastern bank, the centuries of shipbuilding in the river Aura will not be forgotten. After all, some of the most famous Finnish civilian and naval ships, including coastal defence ships Ilmarinen and Väinämöinen, were built on this shipyard. One of the buildings burned to the ground on March 20th, 2008.
