     History
This shop building was used by the Virginian Railway to maintain and repair their fleet of Electric Locomotives used in the West Virginia cola fields. The Virginian Railway was one of the few railroads outside of the Northeastern US to experiment with the use of overhead electric lines to power freight trains. The Norfolk & Western Railway also experimented with the concept, but quickly abandoned the plans. Virginians electrification extended from Mullens all the way to Roanoke, VA, where diesel locomotives were put on the trains for the trip into Norfolk. This shop was used to maintain the locomotives based on the west end of the line. N&W purchased the VGN in 1959, and the shop was closed shortly after. There is evidence that another business used the shops at a later date, as all the interior tracks had been removed from the building. The shops were demolished in 2006.
