The main building is intimidating, constructed of brick and stone. Fenced inmate area located directly behind the main brick building. Two smaller buildings to the rear. The province of Nova Scotia operated it as a correctional facility until it was shut down in 2001. In August of that year, the facility was returned to the municipality. The facility has remained empty since its closure. While closed, buildings have remained intact and secure. The property continued to be maintained (e.g. lawn mowed regularly). On July 13, 2010 the Lunenburg County Jail was marked for demolition by the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg. In November 2010 the mayor of the municipality said tenders will be going out shortly. On September 01, 2011, a tender was awarded to demolish the jail.
