Other buildings include the nurses' dormitory (not accessible to same property). Main building includes five floors, including basement and attic. Building is terrific government funded architecture... built to last. Steam tunnels. 6/9/21 - Currently being developed into apartments/condos. Construction has been ongoing for months at this point and it's almost complete. https://www.bizjou...redevelopment.html [4/24/22] Renovation has been completed for several months now. https://themarineresidence.com/

Original U.S. Marine Hospital, built in 1884, was funded in 1881 by Congress for medical research of yellow fever. The compound consisted of six buildings directly overlooking the Mississippi River just south of the city. The only two original buildings that remain, the Metal Museum's White Building (the hospital's executive building and possibly the nurse's dormitory) and the laundry and mess hall. Additional buildings built in the mid 1930's and opened in 1937. The hospital was in operation until 1965. Building remaind in use as an Army recruitment and office building until the late eighties. Though some sources claim that officers and soldiers used the building as housing during the Gulf War, I severely doubt this as factual considering the state of deterioration of the interior of the building. It seems fairly likely that no renovations have occurred within the last thirty years. Asbestos removal was begun but never finished.
