A sad scene. It was more of a closure for myself that I went there. I have included some pictures of the interior of the store section of the Mekong building, but I did not take any of the apartment areas.... I couldnt... sorry.

An early morning fire in Ottawa's Chinatown area killed five members of a family, the mother, daughter and three sons. Three more people were injured in the fire; two escaped from the building on their own, and firefighters brought one out, fire officials told a media briefing on Tuesday. One of the injured is an infant, who is in hospital with serious burn injuries. Rath Yong, who identified himself as a good friend of the family, said the family's father and son-in-law were also taken to hospital. I have a great loss, a friend, a great friend. That's why I'm still here," said Yong from the scene early Tuesday morning. "So I'm going to later on go talk to my friend – he's still in hospital – to find out what I can do." Firefighters said they were called at 1:41 a.m. EDT Tuesday by a neighbour. When they arrived, the building – an apartment above a grocery store the family operated – was burning fiercely and there was a great deal of smoke. The father managed to rescue his infant grandson from the burning building, handing the boy to a neighbour in the street. He then returned to the burning building to help the rest of his family, but it's not clear whether he was able to make it back up the stairs to the apartment. The Thach family moved to Ottawa from Quebec about 10 years ago, and has run the Mekong store for the past several years, said Yong. As a result, everybody in Ottawa's Cambodian community knew the family, said family friend Vannery Pha. Pha's thoughts were with the three who were fighting for their lives in hospital. "We just want to pray for them," she said. Investigators are on the scene. ----From CBC.CA April 5, 2005
