 Overview
 Description
There are four buildings that make up this complex, two main mill buildings and two smaller buildings; one of the latter may still be in use for storage or somesuch. The other three are easily accessible. There is also a former mill foreman's house in the middle, facing Mecklenburg Mills.

This school sits smack in the middle of what is known as the North Davidson Arts district, where many galleries, restaurants, and music venues such as the Evening Muse and the Neighborhood Theater are. There are a few sculptures along the sidewalk in front of the former Mecklenburg Mills. The buildings have been empty since 2006 at the latest, when they were condemned.

Best time to check it out would be a weekend afternoon when the streets of the area are busy- blending in would be no problem.

Scrappers have literally took EVERY inch of copper out. Tearing the place apart. Hobo and druggie camps everywhere with a lot of debris and bat shit. VERY SCARY at night. Some buildings are very bland and just a lot of shit everywhere.

As of 3/19/14 the Mill is completely inaccessible, all points of entry were sealed off.

     History
The main building closer to 36th street began as Johnston Mills in 1916; it closed in 1975, effectively ending North Charlotte's textile industry, and changed ownership several times, primarily being used as warehouse space.

Mecklenburg Mills (the building across from 37th street) was built in 1905, with the mill village lining 37th street; the water tower for the mill still stands at the edge of the village directly across from the building. It later changed ownership and became known as Mercury Mills before being bought by Johnston; mill operations at Mecklenburg ceased in 1969.

The mills changed hands again in 1980 and 1990, when they were purchased with the intent to convert them into low-income apartments. When the buildings were condemned due to termite damage in 2006, the City of Charlotte took over ownership.

In early 2011, the city put the mills up for sale and a bidding war quickly ensued after a nonprofit called The Community Builders put in a bid for just $610k for both properties. Weeks later they were up to a winning bid of $1.24mil and then sat on the properties for a year and a half. In September of 2012 they contacted the city saying that the properties needed more work than they had realized, including the fact that, "a lot of the wood has started to dry out and crack." They are now asking the city to pay them $2.3mil to continue developing the properties.

The complex has also housed a boxing academy and daycare, among other businesses over the years.
