  •  Interesting Features
The Salton Sea was at one point a very popular tourist destination. Many of the buildings surrounding the sea were abandoned when the water levels dropped and pollution increased. I only got to see a very small part of the north shore, but was rewarded with several derelict buildings.

     History
From Wikipedia: The Salton Sea of today was created starting in 1905, when heavy rainfall and snowmelt caused the Colorado River to swell and then breach an Imperial Valley dike. It took nearly two years to control the Colorado River’s flow into the formerly dry Salton Sink and stop the flooding. Itself once part of the vast inland sea which once covered the area, the endorheic Salton Sink was the site of a major salt mining operation. As the basin filled, the town of Salton, a Southern Pacific Railroad siding and Torres-Martinez Indian land were submerged. The result of the sudden influx of water and the lack of any drainage from the basin resulted in the formation of the Salton Sea.

     Future Plans
There are efforts under way to save the lake, but the tourism industry has collapsed for good.
