 Overview
 Description
The Santa Clara Valley Water District owns and operates 7 reservoirs in Santa Clara Country. Almaden is the most unique as it was built between two old mining towns (New Almaden and Twin Creeks). The dam and reservoir were constructed and flooded/inundated in 1934 and 1935 which also submerged a small town called "Cannon's Resort".

     History
Almaden dam and reservoir is one of the six original reservoirs in the county. It was completed in 1935. "Almaden" in Spanish means "mineral" or "mine." In 1845 Andres Castillero discovered a quicksilver (mercury) deposit in the area now known as the Almaden hills. At one time, the New Almaden Mine was the largest mercury-producing mine in the Americas. The dam and reservoir are located in these same hills. The reservoir can store 1,586 acre-feet of water. Its surface area is 57 acres.

     Future Plans
The Almaden Dam Program includes construction, inspection and maintenance activities. The proposed 10-year program involves three elements: (1) replacement of the intake structure located inside the reservoir and upstream side of the dam; (2) the installation of a dam seepage collection and monitoring system located at the downstream toe of the dam; and (3) ongoing maintenance activities associated with the dam and outlet works facilities.
