Cobourg gets OK to demolish former tannery Northumberland News, Cobourg, ON - 25/10/06
Cobourg's crumbling tannery site will finally face the wrecking ball, which is long overdue, say several council members.
"This is really good news for us," says Mayor Peter Delanty. "This is a process which has taken a long time, but we can finally see those derelict buildings coming down."
Cobourg's property standards committee recently upheld an order it originally issued in July, to the owner of the tannery site that all "buildings, structures, debris or refuse" be removed.
Richard Beasley, the tannery site owner, appealed the July order and his appeal was subsequently dismissed by the committee. There are five major buildings on the three-acre site which have been identified for demolition.
The former Crossen home was thought to be potentially salvageable, but the local architectural conservation advisory committee was consulted and concluded it was not significant enough to save. The demolition work is expected to start in December
