There are many buildings, ruins, mines, cars, and various equipement scattered accross the mountian at an elevation of over 8,000 feet. While only 10% of the town remains, it is considered the best preserved ghost town in America.

In 1859, prospector Waterman Body (pronounced Bodie) discovered an enormous gold deposit high in the remote and unforgiving mountains East of Bridgeport. Although he died of exposure on the mountain only a few months later, others began to establish a mining camp with the hopes of striking it rich. The camp quickly grew and by 1881 the mining town had exploded, boasting a population over 10,000 people and dozens of mining companies. Bodie was one of the first towns in the world to have electricity and with the dozens of saloons, had a reputation for being lawless and wild. The huge Standard Mill complex, which still stands today, ran night and day to process gold ore well into the 1940s. The peak population only lasted a few months and as quickly as it began, the town collapsed when all but one of the mines went bust. By 1890, only 1,500 people remained. In 1932, fire burned most of the town convincing the few people that remained to leave. In 1962, California made the remains of Bodie a State Historic Park. Now it's managed and looked over by California State Parks and is in a state of arrested decay. There are dosens upon dozens of buildings and ruins to check out and explore. Bodie is open everyday of the year even in winter if you can get to it, it's ALWAYS very photogenic.
