Ruins of a late 19th century hydro electric generating station. The image above is from an 1895 illustration looking northeast from Booth Street. Middle Street is on the right and the river is on the left. The great fire of 1900 destroyed the original buildings which were replaced with brick ones, including the new powerhouse, now in ruins, and the building where Vertical Reality resides. The aqueduct between the ruins and VR is now exposed, and would have been covered by the original powerhouse seen in this illustration.

Built in 1891 to provide power for Ottawa's streetcar system, the building was situated over a flume in the Buchannan channel of the Ottawa River. Streetcars were removed in 1959, so it is presumed this is when the plant closed. Very few buildings in this area survived the great fire of 1900. From a 1951 article: "Between 1870 and 1890 the horse was undisputed king of local transportation, plodding along faithfully with small wooden cars in summer and with sleighs in the winter. In the latter year, however, an electrified system was planned, and in 1891 the Ottawa Electric Street Railway Company commenced operations. It was the second electric railway in Canada to operate successfully year ’round. The horse-car system and the electric lines were amalgamated in 1893 and a new company, the Ottawa Electric Railway Company, served the community from that time until 1948 when its assets passed to the control of the city of Ottawa, and the Ottawa Transportation Commission took over transit services in the district."
