The first railway was the Canada Central which ran a branchline to Ottawa off the Brockville-Renfrew line in 1871. In 1872 the St. Lawrence and Ottawa built a branch from it's Ottawa-Prescott mainline at Walkley Road to Ottawa West. This is today's O-Train route. The Prince of Wales Brige was built in 1880 to connect the Quebec Montreal & Ottawa railway with the St. Lawrence & Ottawa Railway and the Canada Central Railway. All were merged into CP soon after. The original steel spans were replaced with larger stronger ones in 1927, although the piers are still original. In 1911 CP built a roundhouse west of what is now the City Centre building. It was demolished in 1967. At the same time the yards extending all the way to the war museum site were removed when CP moved to Walkley Yard. CP ran a long daily freight train across the bridge until 1997 when traffic ran from Montreal via the line through Lachute and Gatineau. This line became the Quebec Gatineau Railway soon after, and a short weekly train ran from Hull to Walkley Yard to interchange cars with the Ottawa Central. With the O-train starting to run in 2001 and terminating at the transitway, the interchange trains ceased and the bridge beecame disused. The far north end of the bridge sees the occasional switch job to the Domtar plant in Hull.
