Built in 1883 by Benedict Lowenstein, the department store was direct competition for Goldsmiths, another local department store owned and operated in the growing Jewish community in Memphis at the end of the 1800's, just after the Yellow Fever Epidemic. Several years later, the Court Annex building was built on the southeast corner of the block and connected to the original building. It was used for additional storage. Elias Lowenstein, the last of the Lowenstein brothers, died in 1919. The Lowenstein Mansion, with gargoyles, stained glass and amazing fireplaces, is still located on Jefferson in the Victorian neighborhood. After 1919, the Lowenstein building was operated by Carol's Furniture, and later Rhodes Jennings (date unknown). Both buildings were owned and operated by Rhodes Jennings until 1980, when the downtown business closed. The east exterior of the building still shows the painted brick facade advertising Rhodes Jennings Furniture.
