St. Louis church has a long history in Fond du Lac beginning when the French speaking Catholics formed there own congregation in 1868. Construction then began on the church building and was finished in 1871. The two towers that have make this church such a recognizable landmark were finished later in 1891. The church is an outstanding example of gothic revival architecture with limestone walls, gothic-arched openings and two impressive towers flanking the main entrance. The towers are decorated with stepped buttresses, stone corbelling, gothic arched openings and tall tent steeple roofs. A school addition was constructed in 1957 which wrapped around the east end of the original church building. Multiple changes were made to the east end of the church at that time to accommodate the addition. These changes included the relocation of the mechanical and electrical equipment and the women’s toilet room to the school addition and the modifications to the north and south walls of the transepts. Other changes were also made to the church over the years including modifications to the stairs in the towers, the addition of the exterior stair enclosure on the north side of the church, the installation of aluminum framed doors and windows and most recently, interior modifications to the school building to provide handicap accessible lifts to the main level of the church. In August of 2005 the Holy Family Parish vacated the church, school and rectory buildings and will move into a newly constructed facility. The buildings have stood vacant for the past ten months and concerns have been raised regarding the structural integrity and the adaptability of the church building for future uses. Excel Engineering was commissioned in June of 2006 to provide architectural and engineering services to address the above issues specific to the original church building. The adjoining school and rectory buildings will likely be demolished to make way for future commercial developments. Because of the historical significance; however, the church building may remain if it is determined to be in the best interest of the City of Fond du Lac. The building was purchased by Dave Haase, owner of Attitude Sports, with the intention of turning it into a business. Those intentions came to a halt on Monday, March 19, 2007 when a fire started in the church during remodeling. The church has been torn down and a cause has not been detrmined.
