Back in the dim distant past, say before 1967, in order to get to the Canadian border from anywhere south of Lake George NY, you had to travel the long, twist and SLOW expanse of US Route 9. In the big highway push of the early 1960's the government won a huge fight with the tree huggers and other eco fascists of the era and planned out an extension to Interstate 87, which at that point, only extended to Lake George. Below Albany it was known as the Thruway and was a toll road. Above Albany, it was to a free, high speed, limited access highway called the Adirondack Northway. It was to extend from Lake George pass through a corner of the Lake George Park and continue north through the eastern edge of the Adirondacks and eventually hook up with Highway 15 at the border with Quebec. Construction began in 1964. Meanwhile, as the highway reached into Essex County, it wasn't decided if there was going to be an exit on the Lincoln Pond Road for the nearby state campsite and park on Lincoln Park itself. Betting on the exit ramp, a local entrepreneur constructed a gas station, campsite, and laundromat in anticipation of all the business that was going to be generated by the new highway. Alas, at the last minute, the exit was decided against and the road went right on by. The place has sat abandoned, unused since 1967 and time is taking it's toll on. Up until about 1995 or so, the owner was doing minor upkeep, as there was still talk of having an exit ramp put in as the distance between Exit 30 and 31 is incredibly long and remote area. Since 1995, the place has begun to deteriorate noticeably.
