*update 2/14/2010* I pass this place daily on the light-rail, it appears that someone is storing building materials here, and the gate is open, i don't know if they close it at night so, the night looks like the best time to explore *update 11/25/11* The current owners have demolished the small concrete ruin (pictured above) containing the power substation at the west end of the yard. The annealing oven is still extant, presumably because of asbestos contamination.

Lots of machinery, a huge crane to climb on and look out at things, A great view of the mountains, a secret room in a concrete ruin.

In 2000, RTD selected the General Iron Works site in Englewood as the preferred location for their new light rail train maintenance facility. The land was obtained in 2001 and demolition of the General Iron Work structures occurred in early 2002. It was originally larger, taking up a lot of the RTD yards and was demolished when RTD bought their part of the property. It is considered an EPA brownfield. I found a document online dated 2000 that said the EPA gave Englewood $200000 to clean the place up. I guess they must have run out of budget. The big structure still standing is an 'annealing oven' and is full of asbestos. The secret room in the concrete ruin may have been part of a power distribution building (now demolished).

High density transit oriented residential development, or more rail yards if RTD decides to expand.
