Railway Express, underneath the train tracks in Schenectady at Liberty Street. Railway Express was a large company that provided package delivery using the nations's railroad system during the 20th century. The train would stop in Schenectady for example, and load the packages directly from the tracks down chutes to the Railway Express dock beneath the tracks. Trucks would drive out for delivery. Some history from an article I wrote: Years earlier, several rail delivery services existed in competition. In 1918, the Railway Administration Act was passed into law (during World War I) and the US Government took over the nation's railroads, forming the United States Railroad Administration. Seven railroad delivery companies were consolidated under American Railway Express Inc. In 1929 the company was sold to 86 companies in the railroad industry and renamed Railway Express Agency. After Railway Express went private, it operated successfully for many years. In the 1940's they focused on refrigeration delivery. By the 1960's demand for their service dropped off. By 1970 their business had withered to a mere ten percent of all parcel by rail. in the 1970's they became mired in litigation with UPS, the railroad unions. In 1975 Railway Express ceased operation, filing for bankruptcy. Railway Express, and other shops once occupied the entire space underneath the elevated rails at what is now the Amtrak Station between Liberty and State Street in Schenectady until 1975. In 2015 this vast cavernous space was filled in with cement from end to end, permanently sealing in offices, signs, file cabinets, and artifacts of this industry.
