  •  Interesting Features
Large pieces of machinery strewn about along with half-dismantled tractors and tractor pieces. Nature is struggling to reclaim the building with bushes, trees and vines growing outside and in. Extremely high roof with skylights, it was airy and cool, except below the boilers.

     History
Sugar production in Barbados once reached over 200 thousand tons from 26 factories. However, this production will never be surpassed since much of the land that was formerly planted in sugar cane is now occupied by houses, roads and industrial sites. Some prime arable land has also been converted to golf courses, or is slated for this type of development.

By 1985 the number of operating factories was reduced to six, namely, Andrews in St. Joseph, Bulkeley in St. George, Carrington and Foursquare in St. Philip, Haymans in St. Peter and Portvale in St. James.

As a result of further rationalization of factory capacity Haymans and Foursquare were closed in 1988, followed by Carrington in 1991, due to boiler failure and Bulkeley in June 2002. The remaining two operating factories are Andrews and Portvale. Some equipment from the closed factories has been cannibalized to keep the remaining factories going.

     Future Plans
Will probably be allowed to decay. The sugar industry in Barbados is expected to cease to exist in the next few years. The land will probably be converted to residential and industrial use.
