In January 1904, the Pittsburgh Shear Knife and Machine Co. was reorganized under the name of Heppenstall Forge and Knife Co. This factory revolutionized shear knives by creating a product with four cutting edges. During World War II, Heppenstall was designated by the Department of Energy as an "AWE" site where atomic weapon employees processed, produced, or handled materials for nuclear weapons. Vintage propaganda posters created by the facility state: "If you worked as hard and fast as a Jap we'd smash Tokio a lot quicker", "A nazi is smart ... he invents new ways to save time and raw materials: it's you against him.", and "Why should I work any harder? I'm not fighting the war!"
The large 14 acre site in neatly, secretly tucked within six city blocks as the neighborhood flexes around the old factory. Although mostly an industrial ghost town, the vacant buildings serve as a canvas for talented local graffiti artists.
