 Overview
 Description
Given the steep grade between Milwaukee and Broadway, the site consisted of numerous roof levels. The building in the southeast looked like more recent architecture grafted onto older parts and was four stories tall.

The older building also consisted of up to four levels. The Milwaukee street entrance, for example, was on the fourth and highest floor, whereas one could exit to Ogden Ave. from the second floor and Broadway from the first. To further complicate things, parts of the third floor were at parking lot and Milwaukee street (north of the main entrance) level.

Fourth floor space was used for offices, a model home on the second floor allow clients to adjust to independent living, the area with the sawtooth roof was used as a warehouse and workshop, the third floor had a cafeteria and kitchen, and two areas were dedicated to maintenance and cleaning.

The entire building had a strangely nasty odor even while active.

A room under the sidewalk of Ogden Ave. and accessible from inside contained large transformers and capacitor banks.

     Interesting Features
The architecture was similar to that of the Pabst Theater and several Pabst brewery buildings also designed by Otto Strack.

Part of the building had an old sawtooth-style roof. Is there an architectural term for this?

One of the building's numbered emergency exits consisted of a ladder to a window at street level.

     History
The MCFI consisted of two distinct buildings joined together, one of which dates back to around the 1870s. The early history of the site is unclear, but in 1938, Jewish Volcational Services began providing vocational assistance to German-Jewish immigrants. The JVS was reorganized as the MCFI in 1989 to focus on the rehabilitation of mentally challenged clients. In 2004, the MCFI moved to 2020 Wells St., abandoning the Milwaukee St. location. Demolition finished around January 2006.

     Future Plans
All original buildings have been demolished to make way for "The Terraces" condos and townhouses with two 13 story buildings and one 8 story building. As the name implies, terraced green space will cover the underground parking.

For whatever reason, The Terraces were never built. At least not here. The plot where The Center for Independence once stood is still an empty lot as of January 2018. Some traces of foundation can still be seen.
