Drainage, or rainwater runoff, aka 'ditch'. Mostly paved with concrete, though broken in many places, brick, cobblestone, sand. Lots of debris. I find the best time to explore is a day or two after a heavy rain.

There are several tunnels either on the main part of the creek or tributaries, that run for very long distances under much of midtown. Occasional pieces of graffiti from the mid to late eighties can be found in the openings to many of the tunnels. One stretch of the creek allows access to the Memphis Zoo.
