This location has been labeled as Demolished, and therefore can be viewed by anyone.
Three-story brick building with a basement and crawspace. Small two-story wooden building in disrepair behind the main building. Main building is divided into 24 "apartments" (more like dorm rooms), with small dining/commons areas.

There is a nearly identical building closer to the main road in the area. It is still in use. Both buildings were part of the Colored Orphans' Home.

Some of the dorm rooms are oddly shaped, especially on the third floor. Many items from the use as a dorm are left -- desks, chairs, window air conditioners, extra fire doors.

We're working on this... No one seems to know exactly what it was. It was last used as dorm space for Marshall University as far as we know, but may have been something else -- the most common rumor is an assisted living home -- before that.

    Edit 4-14-06:

This property began as the West Virginia Normal and Industrial School for Colored Orphans. It was first opened by Reverand Charles McGhee on his Cabell County Farm on March 5, 1900. In 1903 this facility moved to a 190-acre site overlooking the Guyandotte River. On February 24, 1911, the state assumed control of the facility, including the buildings and farms, renaming it the West Virginia Colored Orphans' Home. The state maintained this facility until 1954, when the Supreme Court ruled segregation illegal.

At some point after this, Marshall University obtained the site. This may have been part of the land the university obtained to attempt to build a second campus, a move blocked by the state legislature.

One or both of the buildings on this site are listed on the National Register of Historic Places for their significance in the history of African-Americans.

     Future Plans
No plans that I know of -- though it seems that the building could be repaired fairly easily and reused. It's isolated and miles from the university, so it seems unlikely that Marshall will do anything with it.
