     History
Little is known about the early history of the caves. They had an enourmous expansion when there was a blaze in downtown Liege, but after that it is vague.

In the 1950's the perfect temperature (11 C) and humidity (90-95%0 made the caves popular with mushroom (not the hallucinating one) growers, but labour regulations deemed the caves too unsafe. The caves are prone to sudden collapse, but this could be either at the next rainfall or in 500 years.
     Media Coverage
The Radboud University of Nijmegen investigated the drawings in this cave, and the drawings are from the early middle ages (14th century). See also http://www.nos.nl/...07_tekeningen.html
    (In dutch language).
     Future Plans
Lock them up tighter, to prevent stupid people from hurting themselves, or destroying historical information. They are not very stable, so they're probably not ever going to be reopened to the public unless they make them structurally safe, which will be expensive and takes away the charm.
