Built in the 1920's as a low-income apartment complex. Ownership was later passed to the City of Birmingham when the owner defaulted on a loan in 1993. Despite renovation in 1995, half of the building was condemned and shut down by 1996. In 1984 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1998 to the list of Places in Peril by two local organizations for historic preservation. A large number of homeless people squatted in the building after breaking in through first floor windows, tearing up carpet for their smokey, toxic fires, one of which caught the building on fire in 2003. The building has since been secured. For nearly 10 years the city looked at proposals for redevelopment of the building and has seemed committed to preventing it's demolition. Despite no agreement to preserve the building, Birmingham finally approved the purchase by next-door SRI and sold the site for $400k. SRI soon cleaned up the exterior and interior of the property and took measures to restore the architecture.

Was purchased from the city in 2008 by the Southern Research Institute whose campus occupies the same block. The exterior facade has been restored, and the grounds are being maintained. SRI claims that it will not demolish the building. The interior is to be re-purposed but SRI has not decided what the building will be used for. Possibilities include a conference center, offices, or storage space. 5.22.2023 - November 2021: Southern Research executive CEO Josh Carpenter announced plans to demolish Quinlan Castle for construction of a new Center for Pandemic Resilience.
