     History
Ellesmere Creamery was built in the 1930s to serve the many dairy farms in the region. The creamery was owned by United Dairies, which became Unigate Dairies in 1959. At some point before its closure in 1987-89 the ownership of the creamery transferred to Dairy Crest. When closed it employed nearly 300 people - probably a good third of the town's workforce - so it was a major blow to the town. The site occupies about 50 acres, of which perhaps 15-20 acres are covered by buildings. Much of the equipment was removed from the creamery when it closed, but larger pieces remain. When I first visited the site in 1995 most of the buildings were boarded up and locked, but it was still a fascinating site. Now vandals have cracked open the buildings and regrettably caused a great deal of damage, but explorers can wander freely. This really is an excellent site if you live in the West Midlands or Wales. You could easily spend a whole day exploring here.

     Future Plans
To be demolished if planning permission for a new shopping mall is granted, but the development is currently being blocked by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. In the meantime the site is getting pretty badly vandalised, so now is the time to visit.

UPDATE: Probably now completely demolished, although I haven't been back to check.
