With more than 20000 residents living wthin 1 square mile, on a major thoroughfare and bus line, there should be no reason for a shopping center like this to loose money. But it did. The Kingsley Square shopping center once boasted a Whole Foods Market grocery store with juice bar, a pharmacy, a chiropractor, a dentist, bank branch and several other retail establishments.
When the Whole Foods market pulled out in 2002 it all started going downhill for the other businesses. The remaining tenants were bailing out faster than the property management could raise the rent. Soon nothing was left but a mexican restaurant, a CVS and a donut shop.
According to one source; a neighborhood news paper, a group called Charter Holdings Inc. purchased the 2.4 miliion dollar property in 2005 however the county tax roll does not reflect that.
I scouted this location one night as soon as the heavy equipment and temporary fencing arrived. As luck would have it the fences were blown down in the high winds associated with Hurricane Rita making this exploration more or less a walk on.
There were some minor security issues with this location but by the time this hits the database it will probably be demolished. I will make it publically available after that. There is an occasional roving security patrol on the property at night but he never gets out of his car. There are some safety issues too. Tons of rubble and debris, sharp jagged edges and falling metal and roofing material.
UPDATE 6/6/2006: location is completely leveled including the stores and restuarant the planners originally indicated they would keep
