     History
The Massachusetts State Building of the Cotton States and International Exposition of 1895, held in what is now Piedmont Park, became known as ‘the Craigie House’. The original Vassel-Craigie-Longfellow House was built 1759 and still stands in Cambridge, MA.. Following the Exposition, and because of their work supporting social events during the exposition, Atlanta’s Craigie was donated to the Atlanta Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to serve as a permanent home. The Atlanta Chapter, chartered in 1891, was the first one in Georgia and the second one in the nation.

This structure, purpose-built in 1911 to serve as the headquarters for the Chapter, subsequently became known as ‘The Craigie House’ though it bears no resemblance to either previously-mentioned Craigie House. The front, palladian-windowed portion of the building is an open ballroom/auditorium and is separated from the rear portion by an ornately-milled, Ionic-columned stage. The rear portion consists of a small kitchen and parlor on the ground floor and a modest stairway leading to several smallish rooms upstairs.

A large magnolia fell on the rear of the building in 1985, leading to its current state.

    Demolished 2016. You missed it.
