1922 - The 73 Room Hotel was built for $150,000 by Columbus Vance Henkel on the property of a former boarding house. It featured a barbershop, beauty parlor, newsstand, cigar store & Loan business. 1920s - The hotel was expanded to a total of 130 rooms. 1940s - After the end of WWII the hotel regained popularity after struggling during the Great Depression. 1950s - The Rathskellar Bar - in the hotel basement was a popular local hangout 1961 - Statesville's Downtown declines, hotel sold at auction 1972-1986 - Hotel shut down for 15 years, various bars and restaurants operated on the first floor off an on. 1986 - Hotel was purchased by Jim and Ann Bible who remodel it, operate it as a bed and breakfast and retirement home. 1991 - The Bible's businesses close, Hotel was foreclosed on. 1994 - Hotel was purchased, partially renovated. The restaurant was reopened & a new bar, "The Library," opened. 1998 - Hotel foreclosed on again, restaurant and bar remain open. 2006 - After changing hands a few times the hotel, restaurant and bar all close. 2008 - Hotel was bought by Physician and Businessman Thomas Wilson. After turning the water back on, filling the pool, and having the power turned back on it was used in the movie "The Leathernecks" 2012 - The City bought the property from the Wilson estate after Thomas's death. 2014 - Present - Cities redevelopment efforts begin.

The Vance Hotel is now slated for remodeling and conversion to apartments as of December 2017.
