     History
Apparently built on the site of a former monastery, the hotel is rumoured to be haunted; my mother who once worked there reported jewellery on her dresser jangling despite being alone in a locked bedroom.

The hotel was bought, renovated and extended in the 1980s by the Justices, and later bought by a friend of my grandfather's. The hotel thrived in the '80s but in the early '00s when the owner died it became badly managed and closed due to a licensing problem in 2003. Proposals were made to convert it into a nursing home, but the costs would have been too great.
     Media Coverage
Recent article in the Badenoch & Strathspey Herald regarding the "eyesore", and reporting that it's being knocked down for 22 affordable flats.

"The derelict Royal Hotel in Kingussie is to be transformed into 22 affordable flats.

The hotel is to be demolished after the Cairngorms National Park Authority approved plans by Aviemore and Highland Developments Ltd. The development was originally to have included four affordable units, but it will now be taken over by Albyn Housing Society putting all 22 flats into the affordable homes bracket.

Community council chairman Sandy Bennett said: “It’s just an eyesore, and this is fantastic news. Kingussie badly needs affordable housing. With sewerage the way it is, we have no building at all in the town. This will keep us going.”

Local councillor Gregor Rimell said: “This is good news. The economic contribution from 22 flats will mean more to the town than a hotel.”

The decision was also welcomed by former Kingussie provost and community councillor Tom Wade, who in the past was among community leaders who had campaigned for the hotel to be turned into a residential home for the elderly

He said: “Now that we have a home established in Newtonmore, I am just happy that something is going to happen at the Royal. I am delighted that the plans have cleared all the hurdles.”

Fellow councillor Sheena Slimon said: “I know that we have single people and others on the list who are looking for affordable homes. This is a great boost for the town, and I am sure that the Albyn will be working to keep the flats affordable in the future.”

The development is proposed to incorporate two separate buildings, one fronting onto the High Street and the other built into the slope at the rear of the site."
     Future Plans
    Being demolished for 22 flats.
