The history is a little sketchy. I found reference to a picture a picture taken on June 28th, 1946...so it's been around at least since then. On December 22, 2000 the company "filed Chapter 11 under case number 75316. Assets and labilities were listed as $2 million and $1.3 million respectively. The firm also owes South Trust Bank nearly $1 million." So at some point between then and 2002, the owner just abandoned the place. Walked away and left everything with it. Excerpt from a city pdf: ... is a former electroplater that abandoned its manufacturing plant in downtown Atlanta. EPD’s contractor began removal activities at the site, which included characterization and inventory of the waste, on November 2002. Waste removal activities were completed, including decontamination of the facility, in May 2003. Approximately 305,000 gallons of hazardous waste were removed from the site. Of this, approximately 240,000 gallons of this was electroplating sludge pumped from a 30-foot deep pit inside the building. Approximately 57,000 gallons of non-hazardous debris were also removed from the site. The total cost for removal activities was $945,987 from the state Hazardous Waste Trust Fund." On November 3rd, 2003, the owner passed away. Excerpt from his Obituary: "He was a member of SAMF, NAMF, and the American Electroplaters Society. ..., under his guidance, received recognition from the NAACP for its support of racial equality during the early days of the Civil Rights movement. " I also have a photo from April 4th, 2004 which pictures the place in a much better condition. So with it only being a little over a year since, this place has gone down the tubes fast. Guess that's what happens when there's no owner to lock it up and keep it that way.
