     History
Blaenau Ffestiniog - the Slate Capital of the World. Also considered to be one of the most depressing towns in the UK, as it is completely surrounded by a literal mountain of slate waste....and it's usually raining.

In the late 19th Century, 17,000 men worked in the Slate Quarries, now there's barely a few hundred. The remains of Blaenau's industrial past are everywhere - disused inclines, buildings, cranes, railway lines, tramways, and, of course, slate waste...370 million tonnes of it!

The emphasis now is on tourism, as Blaenau is in the centre of the Snowdonia National Park, with the old narrow gauge steam trains now carrying tourists rather than slate down to the harbour at Porthmadog.
