The beginning of the end came at 8:15 Wednesday morning as Charlie Diller's power and water were cut off.
Diller, a livestock seller with no more livestock to sell, is one of the lone holdouts at the Lancaster Stockyards, once the biggest stockyards east of the Mississippi. Those days are gone now. By the end of the year, most of the stockyards will also become a thing of the past.
Diller's office, in the interior of the 22-acre site, is one of four buildings that will remain. After months of haggling, city officials, stockyards owners and the New York developer interested in the property reached an agreement last month to raze the other structures on the site.
Work began Wednesday and is expected to last four to six weeks. Wednesday afternoon an excavator and a bulldozer operated by Horst Construction flattened dilapidated structures on the northern end of the property, near Marshall Avenue. Across from Diller's office, Amish workers dismantled old pens, salvaging the lumber.
"That's good wood," said Diller in his unlit office, which went dark that morning when Horst and city officials shut off the power and water to begin clearing the site. The dingy light-blue clock high on the wall marked the exact second. Diller said he would ask officials to turn the utilities back on. Until then, the sunlight streaming through the windows would have to suffice.
Steve Johnson, whose family is among about 22 stockholders in the stockyards property, said the demolition work is estimated to cost about $250,000. A developer, Timothy Harrison, of Long Island, N.Y.- based TCH Development, is footing the bill.
Harrison also paid $20,000 for a fence erected in July to secure the perimeter of the site and keep out thieves and vandals.
Stockyards owners believe the property, in Lancaster city just south of the Manheim Township line, to be worth up to $6 million. They worry, though, that the cost of demolition and other measures will result in Harrison offering them a lower price - if in fact he buys the site. His option on the land reportedly ran out earlier this year, though stockholders say his investment in clearing and securing the site show he remains interested.
Officials say two mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus were found at the stockyards in July, though the species discovered normally feeds on birds, not humans.
The dilapidated condition of the site has long concerned both neighbors and city officials.
Still, stockholders are upset at the way they have been portrayed in the media - as fat cats holding out for more money while their property rots. Johnson points out that for many of the stockholders, their stake in the land is their wealth. Indeed, the stockholders in recent years have had trouble paying property taxes.
Johnson and other stockholders are gathering up cobblestones, old adding machines and anything else of value left on the site and storing them in an old hay barn until they can be sold at auction.
"Very few people understand that in its heyday, this site contributed more to Lancaster city and county's economy than Armstrong World Industries in terms of work force and tax contributions," said Johnson. "People have forgotten that."
