  • Killer Sasquatches.
  •  Interesting Features
Sweet historical significance, long, symmetrical hallways, fascinating overgrowth for such a HUGE place.
     Security Measures
  • This is another one of those locations that I have created that has absolutely zero security, except for the prospect of like 8000 chupacabrae attacking you during the night.
  •  Historical Dates
    Built: 1940
    Closed: 1967
     Required Equipment
  • gloves
  • long pants / sleeves
  • flashlight at night, to ward off parazoological creatures.
  •  Recommended Equipment
camera, per usual, and your commuter rail pass.
     History
An Army Reserve base. It is on the border of what is now Wampatuck State Park, but it is completely seperate from the various bunkers and whatnot laying around in there. The bunkers inside Wampatuck were Navy, annexing the Bare Cove establishment in Hingham. Despite the fact that they are unrelated and seperate places, I assume that they are both of the same time period and use (that is during World War II for the purpose of...war).

An interesting factoid: from satellite imagery, it appears that the train tracks coming from it meet up with the old Greenbush Line, which is commuter rail. I assume that this was a very active establishment in its time, given the commuter rail line connection and the various other railways coming out of the woods from all directions - converging at this place - that have now been abandoned and left to waste.

Taken from the Department of Defense's Base Closure and Realignment Report, March 1995:

    "Hingham-Cohasset, Massachussetts
    Recommendation: Close-Hingham Cohasset.

Justification: Hingham Cohasset, formerly a U.S. Army Reserve Center, is essentially vacant and is excess to the Army's requirements. The site consists of approximately 125 acres and 150,000 square feet of facilities. Closing Hingham Cohasset will save base operations and maintenance funds and provide reuse opportunities.

Return on Investment: There is no one-time cost to implement this recommendation. The net of all costs and savings during the implementation period is a savings of $1 million. Annual recurring savings after implementation are $0.2 million with an immediate return on investment. The net present value of the costs and savings over 20 years is a savings of

    $2 million.

Impacts: This recommendation will not affect any jobs in the Boston-Worcester-Lawrence-Lowell-Brockton, MA-NH New England County Metropolitan Area. There are no known environmental impediments at the closing site."

     Future Plans
The Navy bunkers in Wampatuck have been sealed up. When I say "sealed up," I mean completely covered in mounds of dirt that have trees growing on top of them now. The many of the ones in Bare Cove have been demolished and/or filled with dead bodies, apparently. Due to seperate ownership, this base has not yet been covered in dirt, demolished, or closed off due to murder investigation, but the prospect is likely. I have heard no plans thus far, but it's not exactly something that makes headline news when it happens.
