Cottage-styled Kirkbride-esque asylum. The campus spreads across 400 acres of rolling countryside. Large main structure along with many other outlying buildings including multiple villages of housing cottages. As with many other larger asylums it wouldn't be complete without its own burial ground. Over a mile of tunnels connect the main portions of the hospital and the primary patient housing area. This location is very well guarded and quite unsafe - there is a great deal of crocidolite (blue asbestos) as well as other chemicals (notably ammonia), flooded tunnels, bad floors in some of the buildings, and so on. This should not be a place attempted by anybody who is unfamiliar with advanced safety precautions.

Huge campus of buildings. Modelled on the plans of Thomas Story Kirkbride without actually containing the "v-shaped" Kirkbride building. Unlike many other large Asylums the buildings are relatively untouched. This is due in large part to the fact that there are 24-hour guards, and the site is frequently patrolled by state police. Arrests are very common.

Marlboro State Hospital, opened in 1931, is one of three state institutions designed to house the mentally ill. Its architecturally notable campus of central facilities and detached residence halls once covered 900 acres and was designed, loosely following the Kirkbride plan, to provide an incentive to recuperation. In 1940 it became the location of New Jersey’s first juvenile mental health facility. The state decommissioned the facility through the 1990s in part because of an undercover investigation by a state senator named Richard Codey (now sitting govenor) the Corrections Department was foundering in a sea of seriously mentally ill inmates. The buildings retain a high degree of integrity, but at the time of the list, the state has closed the hospital and its future is uncertain.

In a low budget horror flick "The Screaming Dead" 2003. Otherwise notable for local rumors and other "spooky" stories. Tied to many stories of the Marlboro Slaughterhouse, which lies in the woods adjacent to Camp Arrowhead, where the rumors seem to diverge on what happened but supposedly an escapee/work release patient murdered a local farmer/prison guard.

On November 18, 2011, New Jersey state officials announced that the hospital site will become open space for recreational use. It will no longer be under state jurisdiction. Instead, the Monmouth County Park System will oversee the property. Demolishing buildings and cleaning up the property to meet environmental standards will be necessary for completing the $27 million project. The project is slated for completion in 2013. March 2015 the last of the patient cottage (cottage H ) was demo'd.
http://www.state.n...Site%20Restoration,%20Former%20Marlboro%20Psychiatric%20Hospital.pdf UPDATE: Buildings are coming down. The TB, Nurse Housing, Chapel, Swastika house, and all 10 Doctor's cottages are gone. By 2015, the land will be cleared. http://newjersey.n...hospital-1.7977160 UPDATE: As of 12.15.14 only 5 patient buildings left after the demo of the male senile ward, the gym, service building, laundry/butcher shop and the women's disturbed ward. Also 90% of the tunnels have been filled in. Male disturbed, cottages O and R are being abated.
