This building has a lot of historical significance in Erie. The original brewery, built in 1855 burned. It was resurrected in 1857 with over 15,000 square feet on the ground level alone. The Brewery became known as Eagle Brewery, until it was acquired by the Jackson Koehler family in 1883. The 1890, the Brew House was constructed, with its Romanesque appearance. The building was innovative in the fact that the grain was dropped from the roof, and continued downward throughout the brewing process. When the Brewery was closed in 1978, the Koehler Brewery employed 150 people, and was one of Erie’s largest businesses. The building remains to this day, rotting and stripped of most equipment.

The Koehler Brewery Square project will receive $4.5 million from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) and $500,000 in Housing Redevelopment Assistant (HRA) funds to assist with a multi-faceted retail, commercial and residential redevelopment initiative designed to return what was once a proud symbol of Erie's prosperity to its former glory and stature. In addition to the restoration of the former Koehler Brewery buildings, this project will also include a 50-room boutique hotel, a six-to-10-story, class "A" office tower, a 400-700 space parking ramp, a city park and an array of housing options. -August 13 2004, PA Newswire.
