This hospital has withstood multiple fires in the past few years. There is often a town employee in an old pickup truck that is at the location resealing openings. He has been responsible for the building for many years and is deeply disturbed by the way vandals have treated it. He is a good man and has a lot of respect for this old place. 2010 - A fence was erected around the main hospital building. 2016 - The two wings beyond the connector where the auditorium stood have been demolished. The remainder of the structure is expected to be demolished in the near future as the bidding process starts.

The site was chosen for Plymouth County Hospital by drawing an X on a county map and the town in the center was Halifax. Halifax was too low of an elevation for a Tuberculosis sanitarium, so the County Commissioners acquired land on the highest point in Hanson to build the sanatorium. Construction was started in 1915 and the hospital held grand opening ceremony on May 31, 1919. The first patients were admitted the following day. At the time of opening, the sanitarium was considered a state of the art facility featuring a hospital wide heating system that kept the children warm in the harsh New England winters. Children were admitted to Plymouth County Hospital while adults were admitted to State Hospitals (ones specifically for TB such as Lakeville & Rutland). The sanitarium also featured classrooms for the children. In the early 1920's, an annex was added on to the main structure that added additional wards and an auditorium that hosted numerous entertainment acts over the course of the sanitariums existence. The first superintendent of the sanitarium was Dr. Bradford H. Pierce, a well regarded Harvard trained physician. Dr. Pierce was loved by patients and workers alike, and helped keep the sanitarium a well respected Tuberculosis hospital throughout his tenure. Dr. Pierce resided in the superintendents mansion located along High Street as the edge of the sanitarium property. The Town of Hanson later named a street that borders the sanitarium property after him, Pierce Ave, to show their gratitude to the beloved physician. Plymouth County Hospital ceased treatment of Tuberculosis in 1965 and was converted to a chronic care facility. Still owned and operated by the County of Plymouth, the name was changed in the late 1980's to Cranberry Specialty Hospital of Plymouth County. Due to financial stress and the costs to maintain the large and aging facility, the facility transferred patients to the former St. Luke's Hospital building in Middleborough during 1991. The Hanson location officially closed its doors in 1992 after 73 years of continuous operation. The sanitarium has now been vacant for 24 years and is nearly in ruins. A series of major arson fires gutted much of the building of its structure and beauty between 2003 and 2006. Vandalism and arson have continued to plague the buildings even most recently as a fire in August 2016. Soon after the latest fire, the annex (furthest two wards from the center, connected by a curved connector) was demolished, leaving only the original three wards. The remainder is expected to be demolished in 2017 as the funds have been secured.
** Plymouth County Hospital was demolished in 2017. 8 other buildings on property were demolished. This leaves the Bonney House (colonial farmhouse that predated the hospital), second annex, superintendents home, security shed, and the original stone entrance as the only remnants of the former campus **
