Union Dam is made of concrete and now creates a barrier that the Patapsco River must flow around in the path it forced during Tropical Storm Agnes.

The Dam creates a nice pond that is probably very good for swimming. There are no swimming signs posted, though.

Union Dam was built in 1808 to supply power for the J.W. dickey textile mills across the Patapsco River from Ellicott city. In 1972 Tropical Storm Agnes caused the river to flood and the water forced its way around the dam rendering it useless. The remains still sit in the river, with the water flowing around the dam in its new course.

It is currently being debated whether the dam should be removed.
