There are many guesses as to what this building was used for. There is a sign on the southern end that says 'Gelatin shipping/receiving" so it is supposed that they used to make the gelatin for Peter Cooper which is north of Hynite. However the property is also called Hynite Fertilizer, which would also make sense because of the empty warehouse west of the property pretty much filled with a meter-tall coating of manure. Once inside, the building is mostly empty until you reach the most Easterly end. Roof access is also easy via climing a ladder, but it's not too exciting as the building is only three stories tall.

This building is pretty small, and extremely stinky. Don't smell any of the liquid pooling in the machinery on the south end of the ground floor...trust me. Some abandoned machinery. No more asbestos, but still some plastic sheeting from the cleanup. Be careful of the catwalks from the 2nd to 3rd floors as the rust has deteriorated the thin metal. Lots of noisy birds come through, and combined with the wind rustling the cleanup plastic and tree branches scratching the windows, little noises can freak you out here.

Longtime area fertilizer company, pioneer in hydrolized leather meal fertilizer - a fertilizer made from recycled leather scraps from our friends at P&V. Open gondolas of this and fat from the Milwaukee stockyards made for some of the stinkiest CNW local runs, undesirable to brakemen young and old. I heard it went bankrupt around 2002 or so, but its address and phone number were listed until November 2006...crazy, man.

Oak Creek would like to raze the whole area and turn it into mixed-use luxury condos. Anybody whose been to Carrollville, though, knows that that plan wouldn't fit in with the blue collar backwater vibe it's got right now. But it is prime lakefront property, albeit insanely polluted prime lakefront property.
