Henryton Sanitarium consists of a large complex of abandoned buildings in the woods. The large white building is the oldest and largest building on the grounds, and faces the Administration building across a large parking lot. The rest of the buildings are scattered over the grounds and consist of several more large buildings, a moderate sized house, and a garage. I would suggest not leaving your car by the main gate as the police drive by somewhat often, but instead park by the railroad tracks on Marriotsville Road. The tracks lead up to the facility.

Henryton Sanitarium was established in 1920 to care for tuberculosis patients. The main building was constructed in 1920, and over the next thirty years the other buildings were added to the complex. In 1966 it was converted into a mental hospital to care for mentally retarded children. Henryton Road used to run right next to the facility, but the section closest to the complex has been closed to pedestrian traffic since 1972, when Hurricance Agnes caused the nearby Patapsco River to flood, taking out the bridge. As the river creates the border between Carroll and Howard Counties, neither County wanted to pick up the bill for replacing the bridge. Henryton Sanitarium was closed in 1985 and has sat vacant ever since.
