     History
Built in 1927 by Stanley and Isabel Picken as the Aintree Dog Kennels, the first kennel in BC to breed Irish Setters. Built in the traditional English cottage style using salvaged materials from the old Cariboo Road bridge, this extremely rare form of construction sits on expansive grounds which hug the Brunette River. Stanley Picken would ultimately find himself the dam keeper at the nearby dam which, although replaced in the 1950's, remains nearby.

The Picken Estate was purchased by the Greater Vancouver Regional District in the late 90's with plans to make it the new main entrance to the park, using it as an interpetive center and public showplace. However, a massive fire of unknown origin gutted the stately home in 2003, and the GVRD hinted at demolishing the Burnaby landmark, which many residents refer to as "The Hobbit House".

After public outcry and new cooperation from the GVRD's insurance company, plans were reached to completely restore Aintree at an estimated cost of $700,500.

Work has not yet begun, however the restoration plans were recently approved by the City of Burnaby Herritage Commission, and all necessary building permits have been secured.

*UPDATE : 06/13/06 : After three years of work at a cost of over a half a million dollars, the restoration project received the 2006 Outstanding Achievement Award from the Heritage Society of BC. The restoration was led by architect Barry McGinn.
