 Overview
 Description
It's a beautiful place if you like industrial architecture. This building is part of a large tannery complex which has mostly been converted into offices and lofts. There were once tunnels connecting this building to the others, but some of them have been sealed.

You definitely need physical strength to get into and out of this location. It's not a good idea for a solo trip.

There are a few cameras around, since the other buildings have been converted to apartments and offices. Stick away from the south-eastern buildings of the tannery system and you'll be fine. They're mostly watching back doors or loading docks.

  •  Interesting Features
The best part of this building is the spiral staircase that goes about 3 stories high in the open part of the building. At the top of the stairs is a giant funnel (now clogged with roof/ceiling debris). The windows are mostly in tact and have some beautiful architectural value. There is some giant machinery in the main building as well, although the building is fairly small. The basement has some concrete vaulted arches that look cool but are obvious additions to the building likely installed by Sprecher to reinforce the floor for the brewing equipment and machinery. Also, if you're into disturbing organic floor-residue, this is the place to find it.

Possibly the best part is the scenery outside the building looking over the river at the old turnstyle iron train bridge. Unfortunately the train bridge no longer turns for boat traffic and as of recently, the control room on the bridge is now boarded up so you cannot see inside anymore.

     History
This building was (as far as we can tell) originally a boiler house for the larger buildings next door to it. The larger buildings next door (rehabilitated into condos and offices) were once part of Pfister & Vogel. Pfister & Vogel was, at its peak time, the world's largest leather tanning company. When this plant closed, this boiler house had become the original headquarters for Sprecher Brewing Company and the Sprecher logo can still be seen on the smokestack. Sprecher outgrew this facility and relocated to a newer/larger building in the northern suburb of Glendale in 1994. This building has since been vacant and remains fairly untouched since then, but there is not a whole lot left to be seen outside of a few unique structural features of the building. Inside the Verizon headquarters in the renovated section of the tannery complex there are wonderful photos of the tannery in its active years.
