     History
When construction was completed in 1939, the breaker was the modern wonder of its time. It incorporated technological advancements as well as past architectural milestones that made it useful well past the expiration of deep mining in the area.

At its peak, the breaker employed as many as 6,000 workers processing as much as 1,000 tons of coal per hour.

The largest breaker of its kind, built to process several local collierys' anthracite coal, it also includes six Menzies Cones for coal separation from the culm which accumulated from years of storing mining refuse.

The Glen Alden Co., which operated the breaker, coated its coal in a pigment giving it its trademark blue hue.

The facility has been idle since coal production ceased in 1976.
