The mine is an open-pit type. The ore is low-grade but the company has invented a process that makes the extraction of copper from low-grade ore profitable. Besides copper, gold, silver, manganese and turquoise are also taken out. If you visit be extremely careful as the guards and sherrifs deputies will arrest you on sight. They're friendly, but not that friendly.

The sheer size of this mine is mind-boggling. To get a good look, go to the observation point (also known as the mine lookout). NOTE: Most of the mill and smelter has been demolished, and the job of processing the ore and the smelting has been farmed out to other company locations.

Original location was discovered by an army scout in the late 1800's while searching for renegade Apache Indians. in 1935 the main mine "Clay Pit", was opened by the Detriot Copper Company. The mine itself is an open-pit type, with benches that are anywhere from 100 to 200 feet wide, and 75 feet high.

Possible expansion. It's currently listed as the second largest open-pit type mine in the world.
