Craig Dunain was a large Victorian hospital located on a hilltop on the outskirts of Inverness and servicing the whole of the West Highlands and Islands. This was a huge institution with a surprising range of facilities and resources, including a farm, sports fields and a fine dance hall: at one time it housed 2000 patients. With the trend towards community care, this hospital closed in 2000, replaced by New Craigs which you will pass on the way up Leachkin Road towards Craig Dunain. The main building was badly damaged from arson attack in 2007. In 2019 work began to remediate, restore, renovate, and remodel in luxury apartments and holiday homes.

Being converted into 118 luxury apartments, partially demolished (mainly the '70s additions and possibly the '30s ones, even the magnificent main hall is already being demolished for a "village green" and the mortuary has been turned to dust) and 1200 new-build houses are to be built on the grounds.
