     History
Once a warehouse district soon to be demolished and turned into park and nature preserve.

    [edit by ohten:

The portion of the peninsula nearest the river will be turned into an a Audoban Preserve managed by Metro Parks. The remainder of the site will be turned into some sort of mixed use neighborhood development. At this time, a portion of the brick wharehouse will be retained, but everything else will be demolished.

    HISTORY
The present day railroad tracks mark the location of the Ohio and Erie Feeder Canal, which channeled water from the Scioto down to Lockbourne where it helped supply the main branch of the canal. By the late 19th century, the canal was abandoned and essentially an open sewer. Two railroad mainlines were run in its place. (Interestingly enough, Columbus plans to put a new trunk sewer to the treatment plant under the railroad tracks in the next decade) The catastrophic flood of 1913 wiped out the riverside tracks as well as every downtown bridge except for Broad Street. The flood wiped clean both sides of the river, and as a result allowed the city beautiful location of Central High School, City Hall, the Ohio Departments Building, and the embanking of the east side of the river.
Much of the Whittier site was under water until after the flood of 1913, when the broad basin of the Scioto was channeled and a 14' embankment built. Prior to this, only a brickworks existed on the peninsula, giving its name to Furnace St. Afterward the two lazarus wharehouses were built and abandoned in the early 1990's.
