 Overview
 Description
The Nature Conservancy now owns the stewardship rights to this parcel of State land, excluding the property around the National lead mine that was retained by NL.

Several old houses, the oldest dating back to the start of the mine (1800,s). The smelter. Fire pumping station.
Check out the houses on the other side of the Hudson. They are in much better shape. Cool place, and as usual, check out the National lead mine on the other side of the Hudson. You never know what you'll find at Tahawus. Two sides of the river, separated by 60 years. Fascinating.
The village used to be bigger, but much of it was moved to Newcomb to make way for another pit for National lead's facility on the other side of the river. Some of the modern buildings at the NL site, including the Tahawus school, was burried under some of the tailings. A close observer will be able to locate the foundation of the gas station and the YMCA.

The smelter! You'd be hard pressed to find a 1850's piece of equipment anywhere, seemingly forgotten. Hikers to Mt Marcy seem to pay no attention. Go inside the furnace! I had seen Shaun Oboyle's pics and thought the chimney was small, but it is not. You'll find yourself in an 8 foot across chimney, again with no mortar. Amazing!

     History
The Macyntire mine first came into being in the early 1800's. The mine ran into hard times by the end of the century due to lack of a rail line, and impurities in the ore(titanium). One of the oldest iron smelters in the country is here.
In the '40's, National lead built it's mine at Tahawus, and once again the village was back in full swing. Due to the need for a new pit, much of the village was physically relocated into Newcomb. Many of the residents refused to move, thus, much remains of the buildings, ranging to late 19th century to probably early 50's. The National lead mine and Adirondack are related, but are separated by many years.

     Future Plans
The State took over the village and surrounding areas in 2008 by transfer of the conservation easement previously on the property between Finch Pruyn and the Nature Conservancy. Renovations of some sort continue on the MacNaughton Cottage due to its historical association with then-Governor Teddy Roosevelt, and the furnace. Otherwise, the area is left to rot, and probably will be for the foreseeable future for no other reason than lack of funds to do any more with the decrepit houses.
