Perhaps one of the oddest purpose-built McDonald's restaurants. The north end of the building contained the kitchen and a small amount of seating, and an additional seating area extended into the first floor of the attached red-brick building. The second floor contained offices for an insurance rep and the franchisee. In later years these offices appeared vacant. It was rumored that there was a vacant area around the seating area into which the restaurant could be expanded if needed. The interior decor was originally based on a fraternity/sorority theme, which was vandalized in short order. During the late 1970's the oddball, passenger-side drive-thru window was added. When the restaurant opened sometime in the early 70's, the adjacent liquor store remained for several years (through 1976 or so) in a square building in the middle of the front parking lot, blocking the McDonald's entrance. The neon "Beer-Wine-Liquor" sign from that building was salvaged and is now on the current building.

Dates are approximate, the build date is an educated guess based on my first visit there around 1974. Restaurant moved across the street into a former Roy Rogers location sometime around 2000.

University of Maryland campus newspaper The Diamondback reports that a 14 story apartment building is being built on this site that will open in 2005. Since it'll be right in the approach path to College Park Airport, it presents yet another threat to the world's oldest continuously operating airport.
